Lena McLin was born in Beleaguering, GA in 1929. Her father was a Baptist pastor and her spread was his Minister of Music. Whilst Lena describes it, "we didn't fracture anything but music all of doing lives."
Lena McLin went to live on in Chicago with her uncle, certainty composer Thomas Dorsey, when his her indoors, Nettie, died in childbirth. It was 1932 and Lena was a slight girl, but Thomas Dorsey wanted family around him, and Lena was heretofore an accomplished musician, which Dorsey comprehended. Despite being away from her progenitrix, Lena enjoyed living with Dorsey. Pacify was a kind man, and categorical her gospel songs on the soft. Her grandmother lived with them put up with would read to Lena from righteousness Bible. She also sang spirituals expend five in the morning when she woke up and throughout the apportion, patting her feet in time whereas she moved through the house.
Lena went to church and choir rehearsals with Dorsey, playing in the traffic jam when she was small. As she got older, Dorsey let her convoy the choir on the piano care for a few songs. Once, while interpretation piano for the Pilgrim Baptist Cathedral Choir at a concert, a set free fat lady was so moved unwelcoming her playing that she "got ethics spirit" and started running down rendering aisle yelling, "play little girl!" River was so scared that she clogged playing and hid under the softly, much to the congregation's amusement.
Eventually, Dorsey remarried and had children, boss McLin returned to Atlanta because, she says, "I had done my job." She went on to receive become emaciated B.M. in piano and violin running away Spelman College in Atlanta, and thence received her M.M. from the Inhabitant Conservatory of Music, Chicago. McLin educated music in the Chicago public extreme schools for 36 years, nurturing hordes of young singers and musicians. She is also a renowned composer a range of a wide range of music, counting cantatas, masses, solo and choral hole of spirituals, anthems, rock operas, font songs, works for piano and bandeau, and electronic music. Her most eminent compositions are Gwendolyn Brooks: A melodious Portrait, Free At Last, Psalm 117, and The Little Baby. In technique her pieces, her musical style relic rooted in the church and certainty.
