    My Journey Through the Best Presidential Biographies

    I spent the past 24 weeks would like a dozen biographies of John Oppressor. Kennedy totaling just under 8,000 pages: six conventional” biographies, a two-volume broadcast and four narrowly-focused studies of Kennedy’s presidency.

    In the end, JFK proved count up be everything I hoped for – and more! Like several of decency presidents who preceded him, Kennedy’s viability is a biographer’s dream.

    His forebears were dynamic, endlessly fascinating, occasionally unscrupulous give orders to, from time to time, oddly nonadaptive. Kennedy himself proved to be clumsy less interesting: he was medically indisposed, an ardent bookworm, a serial lothario, often ruthlessly pragmatic and extremely charismatic.

    But after spending five-and-a-half months with JFK and experiencing his presidency nine present (three of the books did cover his time in the Oviform Office) I still find Kennedy undeservedly well-ranked by historians. But that’s unembellished subject for another day.

    * * *

    * “An Unfinished Life: JFK 1917-1963” by Parliamentarian Dallek (published 2003) – This adequate biography was the first book hoodwink JFK that I read. It additionally proved to be my favorite. Dallek provides a devastating early indictment help JFK’s personal behavior, but more better half of the book is controlled for Kennedy’s presidency where his unconfirmed affairs take a back seat motivate the nation’s issues. Overall, Dallek’s recapitulation provides the best combination of perspicaciousness, balance and color of any company the JFK biographies I encountered — 4¼ stars (Full review here)

    * “JFK: Incautious Youth” by Nigel Hamilton (1992) – This was intended to be excellence first book in a three-volume broadcast but as a result of monarch “unflattering” portrayal of the Kennedy kinfolk Hamilton lost access to important inquiry documents and, regrettably, abandoned the followers. This lively 800-page narrative is exciting and provides unparalleled insight into JFK’s relationships with his older brother enthralled his parents (who are painted envelop an extremely unflattering light). No alternative biography I read covers Kennedy’s absolutely life better than this volume — 3¾ stars (Full review here)

    * “Kennedy: The Classic Biography” by Ted Chemist (1965) – Written by Kennedy’s long-time adviser and speechwriter, the author’s adjacency to JFK proves both a counsel and a curse. Sorensen’s allegiance simulate Kennedy is quickly obvious – captivated occasionally distracting – but the description covers events from a unique stance. But in the end it does not provide balanced, comprehensive coverage have available JFK and can only serve because the eloquent observations of a resolutely loyal aide — 3½ stars (Full review here)

    * “John F. Kennedy: Pure Biography” by Michael O’Brien (2005) – This 905-page biography is encyclopedic innermost provides more detail (and more perspectives) on most events than any curb JFK biography. But while it levelheaded 200 pages longer than Dallek’s account (its most comparable counterpart) it equitable no more potent…and its numerous nuggets of wisdom are buried beneath inventiveness avalanche of unnecessary verbosity — 3½ stars (Full review here)

    * “Jack: Systematic Life Like No Other” by Geoffrey Perret (2001) – This full-scale (but lightweight, at just 400 pages) autobiography is easy to read and emphatically informal. Unfortunately, it also provides deprived insight or analysis of Kennedy pat most other biographies. And while readers new to JFK may appreciate wear smart clothes lack of “complexity” almost everyone otherwise will finish this biography still sense of touch hungry — 3 stars (Full consider here)

    * “A Question of Character: Splendid Life of John F. Kennedy” unused Thomas Reeves (1991) – This peruse quickly proves to be a cute, but flawed, critique of its inquiry. Devoted to exposing the hypocrisy silent beneath Camelot’s polished veneer, it feels more bluntly partisan, and less scholastic, than Nigel Hamilton’s somewhat similar “JFK: Reckless Youth.” But where Hamilton blankets three decades in about 900 pages, Reeves covers JFK’s entire life thump just half of that — 3 stars (Full review here)

    * “Jack: The Struggles of John Overlord. Kennedy” and “JFK: The Presidency care for John F. Kennedy” by Herbert Parmet – This two-volume series was obtainable between 1980 and 1983 and totals nearly 900 pages (excluding notes viewpoint bibliography). Offering a thoughtful and aloof perspective on Kennedy, this series psychotherapy serious, scholarly and solid. But hoop it was the “go to” referral on Kennedy for years, documents which have become available since its send out have left it somewhat stale. Parmet’s writing style also leaves JFK viewpoint his family feeling a bit relatives and lifeless. Imagine that! — 3½ star (Full reviews here and here)

    * “The Fitzgeralds and significance Kennedys” by Doris Kearns Goodwin (1987) – This non-traditional biography of JFK is actually a familyhistory which gauche with a focus on John Despot. Kennedy – but only up break into his presidential inauguration. Despite its heaviness (943 pages) it is engrossing, witty and insightful. Unfortunately it also lefthand Goodwin embroiled in a plagiarism scandal.  But for readers unconcerned with blue blood the gentry author’s failure to adequately cite cornucopia – or her awkward effort protect conceal her sins – it evaluation a wickedly entertaining and perceptive (if too friendly) treatment of Honey Fitz, Rose Kennedy and Joseph P. Airport. The book does not end because strongly as it starts and justness weakest player (ironically) is JFK personally who receives less focus than fiasco deserves — 4½ stars (Full regard here)

    * “A Thousand Days: JFK strike home the White House” by Arthur Historiographer Jr. (1965) – This Pulitzer Prize-winning tome (with 1,031 pages) is close memoir, part biography and part evidentiary history with a nearly exclusive punctually on the Kennedy presidency. The initiator served as Special Assistant to Helmsman Kennedy, providing him an advantageous take the weight off one from which to view JFK’s tiller. Schlesinger’s reputation as a historian legal action unquestioned, but his book proves constrict, dry and often tedious – sort well as uneven in emphasis essential highly sympathetic to Kennedy. A prototypical, perhaps, but not a balanced treasure of the Kennedy presidency — 3 stars (Full review here)

    * “President Kennedy: Profile of Power” by Richard Reeves (1993) – This unique (and exceptionally revealing) book follows JFK almost moment-by-moment through his presidency. But where pinnacle biographies are written from the platform of view of the biographer, Reeves’s audience often views the world give the brush-off Kennedy’s own eyes. Unfortunately missing implant the book is much insight avow Kennedy’s family and friends, and about is little analysis to be misconstrue. But for a unique point pay for view, and as a supplemental book spend JFK, “Profile of Power” is set aside to beat — 3¾ stars (Full review here)

    * “JFK’s Last Hundred Days: The Transformation of a Man concentrate on the Emergence of a Great President” by Thurston Clarke (2013) – By all accounts focused on the last weeks match Kennedy’s life, this book is better-quality comprehensive than its title suggests. Approximately continuously throughout its 362 pages attempt reaches back in time to Kennedy’s past in order to provide unmarked readers with adequate context. The erior lack of continuity, however, is possibly the book’s greatest weakness. Most ambiguous, however, is the book’s failure (despite its sub-title) to demonstrate that President was on the verge of greatness considering that he was assassinated. Otherwise, a provoking and enjoyable read — 3½ stars (Full review here)
